Fracture in polymers: Basic concepts and testing methods

Summary

This lecture gives an overview of the fracture behaviour of polymers through the introduction of the main testing methods used for their characterization. The lecture is composed of two sections. The first section outlines the main fracture mechanics parameters and the basic aspects of fracture testing employed for polymers. The second section focuses on the testing methodologies used for the measurement of the fracture properties of polymers, and presents the diverse fracture responses that polymers can exhibit. Polymeric materials can show brittle as well as highly ductile behaviour, depending on polymer type, formulation characteristics, and loading conditions.
