TC4 - Lecture 9

Notching for fracture testing of polymers

Summary

The test methods for the fracture testing of polymers require to previously generate an initial natural crack in the polymer. The quality of the natural crack depends significantly in the method and skills of the tester. This aspect is particularly critical considering that the initial crack crucially affects fracture data, since notching conditions have a direct impact on the radius and deformations around the crack tip. In this lecture, the impact of the notching on the fracture testing of polymers will be discussed, additionally a notching approach permitting to get reproducible and repeatable will be presented.
